Assisi 1986

October 1986

It was an extraordinary event because nothing like this had been done in history. Sixty two leaders of the major world religions met together in Assisi to pray for the peace. These pilgrims prayed, fasted, and shared the common values of the major religions.
Their focus was ecumenical and inter-religious dialogue, a search for common ethical values among all people, and the responsibility of religions to prepare the way of peace.
They examined new kinds of dialogue to overcome ideological and political contrasts; to promote freedom, justice, truth; to advocate for human rights, and solidarity among people.
They affirmed the value of cultural differences among people; the meeting of people beyond ideologies and prejudices; and the supremacy of the conscience.
